I went to the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre tonight for my British and American Musical Theatre class to see the musical “Spring Awakening.” It was FANTASTIC! The show was about teenagers in Germany in 1891 who are struggling through the process of puberty, self-discovery and self-exploration (hence the title). Essentially it was a coming of age story. First off, the entire venue (located in Lyric Square) was really cool and just didn’t seem like a theatre. When you walked in and went up the stairs to the first floor, it was all like a restaurant type place, then you had to go up more stairs to get to the main theatre. But all of the signs and writing on the wall telling you where to go were like in fun font and just…comfortable and not theatre like. It just didn’t have the “hoyti toyti” feel, it was relaxed and awesome! The theatre itself was GORGEOUS and I was down in the stalls 4 rows from the front (so when the fog/smoke machine started we were getting the fog in our faces and it was surrounding us and it was AWESOME!)! The stage had no curtain and all of the scene changes took place onstage with the audience watching and were done by the actors/actresses themselves. There were also seats on stage where some of the audience got to sit and the cast sat interspersed with them since they stayed on stage most all the time! It was just so neat and organized and…fluid and none of that detracted from the show at all. The songs were great, they weren’t what one might think of as musical songs, but most of them were rock and roll, it was soooooo cool!!! The cast was so young and just FABULOUS. They all had such great voices and the entire show was just so solid and captivating!
Well I can’t say too much more because I am making Bridget go and see it and I don’t want to spoil it more for her…although it is hard since I just want to tell her all about it and what happens instead of keeping my mouth shut!!!
But yea, absolutely AMAZING, very well-done musical that I would recommend to anyone without hesitation!
